Full Spectrum: Peer-to-Peer Professional Growth and Development for the Arts Sector
"Full Spectrum: Peer-to-Peer Professional Growth and Development for the Arts Sector" is an essential toolkit I had the privilege of contributing to, designed specifically for self-employed artists and arts organizations. This 8-video series, born from a collaboration among artists and cultural leaders, including myself, offers practical skills and knowledge across diverse areas such as project management, video production, marketing, and communications.
The genesis of Full Spectrum came from a direct dialogue with our local artistic community here in Ottawa. The Ottawa Arts Council conducted surveys and stakeholder interviews to pinpoint the services most needed by artists. The resounding feedback highlighted a gap in professional development opportunities, which led to the creation of this series.
In my session within the series, I delve into the critical importance of localizing your brand for its long-term sustainability and growth. Drawing from my own journey and the evolution of TIMEKODE, I outline how diversifying your brand within the arts ecosystem can not only enhance its longevity but also enrich its cultural relevance. The pandemic has undeniably posed numerous challenges for performing artists, but it has also unveiled new avenues for innovation and creativity.
I share insights on cultivating community collectives, with a particular focus on the music community, offering tips on leveraging community-driven projects over commercial ones. This approach, rooted in culture, community, and change, encourages artists to immerse themselves in cultural exchange spaces, identify gaps within their local culture scene, and harness the diversity of ideas, talents, and perspectives available within their community. As these collectives develop, organizing roles and responsibilities becomes crucial for efficiency and effectiveness, embodying the spirit of peer-to-peer growth and development.
